What is Macular Pigment ?

• Macular Pigment is a yellow pigment in the macula region of the retina
• The pigment filters harmful blue light, which can contribute to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
• The pigment enhances visual performance and makes vision sharper
• The pigment is an antioxidant which prevents free-radical damage. Free-radical damage is also strongly believed to contribute to AMD.

What is the role of Macular Pigments in Preventing Macular Degeneration? 

• Light is filtered by Macular Pigments before being passed to the more sensitive retinal layers below it.
• The sensitive retinal layers are damaged by, among other things, blue light.
• Damage to the sensitive lower layers contributes to both Wet and Dry macular degeneration
• If Macular Pigment levels are reduced, less light is filtered, and more is let through to cause potential damage
• Boosting Macular Pigment levels can help protect against age-related macular degeneration.

How do I Boost Macular Pigment Levels ?

• Meso-Zeaxanthin, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the building blocks of Macular Pigment.
• Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be made in the body and have to come solely from the foods we eat.
• Meso-zeaxanthin is made in the retina from lutein; however, it is thought that some people are unable to do this
• Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in leafy green vegetables and fruits. Eating these foods is beneficial; however, even in those with good diets, it is difficult to get the necessary level of nutrients the eyes need.
• That’s why regular supplementation is recommended for optimum eye health.
